Prior symmetry, similarity-based reasoning, and endogenous categorization

چکیده
This paper presents a rational theory of categorization and similarity-based reasoning. I study a model of sequential learning in which the decision maker infers unknown properties of an object from information about other objects. The decision maker may use the following heuristics: divide objects into categories with similar properties and predict that a member of a category has a property if some other member of this category has this property. The environment is symmetric: the decision maker has no reason to believe that the objects and properties are a priori di¤erent. In symmetric environments, categorization is an optimal solution to an inductive inference problem. Any optimal solution looks as if the decision maker categorizes. Various experimental observations about similarity-based reasoning coincide with the optimal behavior in my model.

متن کاملTheories and Similarity: Categorization under Speeded Conditions
A largely accepted view in the categorization literature is that similarity-based reasoning is faster than theory-based reasoning. In the current study, we explored whether theorybased categorization behavior would continue to be observed when people are forced to make category decisions under time pressure. As a specific test of the theory-based view to category representation we examined the ...
متن کاملSymmetry-Driven Shape Matching
We propose a novel Bayesian framework of symmetry-driven shape similarity to incorporate structural shape descriptor into conventional geometrical shape descriptor. We use rotation and reflection symmetries for structural shape description. Symmetry detection on each shape image provides a qualitative and a quantitative categorization of the types and the degrees of symmetry level. The posterio...

This article is a response to E. Heit and B. K. Hayes’s (2005) comment on the target article “Induction and Categorization in Young Children: A Similarity-Based Model” (V. M. Sloutsky & A. V. The response discusses points of agreement and disagreement with Heit and Hayes; phenomena predicted by similarity, induction, naming, and categorization (SINC); and relationships between S...
متن کاملModels of Similarity for Case-Based Reasoning
We motivate and present similarity metrics, the similarity measurement framework we have developed for use within CaseBased Reasoning Systems. In this framework similarities are values from any type on which a complete lattice is defined. This gives us a wide range of intuitive ways of measuring similarity and a large number of ways in which different metrics can be combined. The paper conclude...
